What will an indexer need from me?
Providing the following will help produce a high-quality index and minimize your costs:

- A minimum of two weeks notice before beginning work on an index. Freelance indexers are usually working on two or more deadlines concurrently, so lining up an indexer ahead of time is a good idea.
- A .PDF file of the final pages. Changing page numbers after indexing has begun can add significantly to the final cost of the index.
- A list of specifications you want the indexer to follow. This includes things like indented or run-in format, typographic conventions, and editorial style guides. If you're not sure about these things, an experienced indexer can recommend what will be appropriate for your project.
- Any special instructions on the inclusion and handling of endnotes, illustrative material, appendices, etc.
